Provider Training Licensed child care providers in Washington state are required to complete a 20-hour basic training and 10 hours of continuing training annually. The Washington State Training and Registry System (STARS) is a career development and training system for individuals who work in child care, early education, and school-age care. STARS training is for family child care providers, school age care supervisors, school age care site coordinators, center directors, program supervisors, and lead staff. The 20-Hour STARS Basic Training can be taken through a Washington STARS approved trainer. Child Care Resources is a STARS approved trainer. Step 1: Request STARS ID A Stars ID Request Form must be submitted to Washington STARS to get a STARS ID which is used to track all STARS training. Go to STARS ID Request Form Step 2:
The STARS 20-hour Basic Training must be completed within the first six months of being licensed or hired. The material covered in the 20-Hour Basic Training is based on the state guidebook, An Adult Sized Guide to Child Sized Environments, which is a companion to Washington State’s licensing requirements. Providers are required to complete 10 hours of continuing education every year. Training must be based on Washington State Core Competency Areas. For center directors and program supervisors, five of the ten hours each year must be in the area of administration. We offer this training. STARS Scholarship Form (English) Exemptions and Special Situations For information about internet or video training for the 20-hour STARS Basic Training, contact Kris Lowe at lowe@childcare.org. Providers with previous early childhood or school age care training can apply for an educational exemption from STARS by filling out a Provider Profile Form and submitting the required documentation. Licensors can also approve a waiver based on experience.
